A couple months ago I was tagged in a Facebook post from a friend about the opportunity to review a new book by Laura Miller! As a self-proclaimed bookworm, I was very excited about this opportunity…. but also pretty sure I wouldn’t get picked! (I’ve never written a book review in my life, and my blog is less than consistent these days). Nevertheless, I filled out the form and crossed my fingers!
The very next day, I got an email from none other than the author herself telling me she would love for me to review her new book (The Life We Almost Had)! That’s when the panic set in…. I wasn’t really sure I could do it!
(But here I am, and I’m going to rock it).
I got my book in the mail a couple days later and started reading that weekend. Actually, I should say I started—AND FINISHED reading that weekend. We went camping and I honestly could not put this book down! I didn’t help cook. I didn’t pick up after the kids. I didn’t clean up the campsite…..
I read. The ENTIRE time. I was obsessed.
The Life We Almost Had reminded me so much of my own life, it was scary! A love story that began in a tiny Missouri town, just like my own!! (One of these days I will fill you guys in on my middle school love and how that man became my husband)!
The Life We Almost Had tells the story of Berlin and Iva, who were neighbors that became best friends–and then inevitably fall in love at only 12 years old. After a handful of heartfelt and exciting adventures, Berlin and his family moved away from the small town in Missouri and they never saw each other again…. until seven years later when they found themselves with only one week to reconnect. Iva and Berlin got this time to make new adventures and to look deeper into their past—learning things they never knew before. This book is a true testament that things don’t always work out the way you plan
—even when that’s all you’ve ever wanted.
One of my favorite things about this book was the attentiveness of detail that was given to each character and every situation. Throughout the book, I truly felt the character’s emotions, a real connection to them, and could truly picture what they were going through. When I would close my eyes, I could “see” the scenery in detail and I loved that!! Another great thing about this book is that the chapters alternate between Berlin and Iva’s accounts of the current situation, as well as from past to present. This really made me feel that I was learning about their thoughts and feelings, firsthand, instead of having to guess what the other characters were actually thinking.
I cannot give enough praise for this book and I could go on and on.. but I don’t want to give away any spoilers!
From my experience, when you pick up “a love story” you can almost always determine exactly what is going to happen before you even get into the second chapter. It’s really rare that I can’t predict exactly how a romantic book will end—-but this book totally defied my expectations! I laughed. I cried tears of joy. I screamed at the book. I cried sad tears……. then I did it all over again! I never expected what was coming next, and I think that was my favorite part!
I honestly give this book a rating of FIVE STARS!
