So let’s talk air fresheners. You know, those aerosol cans that are commonly used in the restroom(s) and other areas to simply just “mask” odors? I am pretty confident in saying that probably MOST of us have one or two of those cans throughout the house. ✋ Us being included in this, also. But that is about to quickly change!
Now tell me this, have you ever actually read the back labels?! No? Do me a favor and read it the next time you pick it up to use it. It’s not very fun stuff. I mean, I scanned over ours as I was tossing it in the trash and I am pretty sure I read “DO NOT BREATHE IN”. Wait, what? How in the world could you even spray something like that again after reading that.

Over the last 11 months, we have been making efforts to rid our home and life of toxic/chemical filled products. (i.e. soaps, cleaning products, lotions, etc) Air-fresheners was next on our list! One of the BEST things about tossing out any and ALL scented/air-freshener store bought products (candles, aerosols, scented wax) is that my two boys got to get in on the fun! Take a look at the super simple recipe we used!

Homemade {chemical-free} air freshener spray

  • 4 oz. glass spray bottle {I got mine HERE}
  • 2 oz. witch hazel; this helps to emulsify the oils
  • water
  • 2-3 of our favorite essential oils
    (we used Purification, Lemon and Thieves)

STEP 1: Fill glass bottle half way with witch hazel

Step 2: Fill rest of bottle with distilled water, leaving enough room for your drops of oils. (see photo below to get an idea of how full to fill bottle)

STEP 3: Add 10-12 drops of your favorite essential oils! We chose Purification essential oil, not just because of the fresh smell, but because it actually aids in purifying the air; not just “masking” the odors. Lemon essential oil because it is lemony and “clean” smelling. Thieves essential oil blend for it’s germ fighting properties.

Put lids on, shake up and enjoy!
